Montenegro’s trade deficit widened to €348.7 million in May 2026, up from €338.2 million in the same month a year earlier. Exports increased by 7.5% year-on-year to €39.1 million, while imports rose 3.5% to €387.7 million.

On a cumulative basis, the trade deficit expanded to €1,512.8 million from €1,458.4 million a year earlier. Total exports declined 9.4% to €214.8 million, reflecting weaker sales of crude materials (-19.8%), chemicals (-35.4%), machinery and transport equipment (-39.3%), and miscellaneous manufactured articles (-9.2%).

By contrast, imports grew 1.9% to €1,727.6 million, supported mainly by higher purchases of beverages and tobacco (+6.6%), animal oils and fats (+26.9%), minerals, fuels and related materials (+7.5%), and chemicals (+5.5%).

Europe remained Montenegro’s dominant trading partner, accounting for 94.5% of total exports and 78.7% of total imports.
